Quarterly Review Round-Up with GIVEAWAY

I decided it was probably time for me to start doing some sort of review round-up, but I don't want to do a weekly or monthly one linking to ALL my reviews. I decided that a quarterly one where I could revisit the best books I've loved plus those that I don't usually include on here (DNFs and adult novels) is what I wanted.

The Books I've DNFed (with links to my reasons-if I shared them-on Goodreads):
Dangerous by Shannon Hale
Elusion by Claudia Gabel, Cheryl Klam
Game Over, Pete Watson by Joe Schreiber
The Nightingale's Nest by Nikki Loftin (I am going to revisit this one. Maybe.)
No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale

The Adult Books (all romance) I've Read (links to reviews on Goodreads):
Carolina Home, Carolina Girl, and Carolina Man by Virginia Kantra
The Chocolate Temptation by Laura Florand
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean
Proof By Seduction by Courtney Milan
Ten Ways to Be Adored While Landing a Lord by Sarah MacLean

The 4.5 and 5 Star Reads of this Quarter (This is where the Giveaway comes in.) Links to my review unless otherwise noted.

I'm having a really great reading year so far. Last year at this time I had three to four books I LOVED. There are so many more this year. I'm hoping this is a sign of a whole good year and not a sign that the rest of it will be terrible.

Black Dog by Rachel Neumeier (YA Fantasy)
Boys of Blur by N.D. Wilson (MG Fantasy; Review posts on Monday.)

Carolina Man by Virginia Kantra (Adult Romance)
The Chocolate Temptation by Laura Florand (Adult Romance)

Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty (YA Fantasy)*
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge (YA Fantasy)

A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge (MG Fantasy)
The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing by Sheila Turnage (MG Fantasy)

Per your frequent recommendations, I read Jinx and loved it. I've also really enjoyed Empire of Bones, but that has been put on pause so I can read it alongside my husband who is still catching up on the Drowned Vault. I'm not surprised you didn't finish Dangerous, I found the beginning hard to fall into and the ending a little cliche. However, when the superpowers arrived, I felt the pace picked up and the book became a much more enjoyable read for me. I'm a sucker for superpowers though, so maybe I was biased.

If I win, I'm torn between Cruel Beauty (your frequent recommendations are always ones I find I also enjoy), Boys of Blurr (love Wilson's writing), and Jinx Magic. Hopefully I can decide if I do.

I'm @pensrose on twitter and I love following your tweets!

My favorites this quarter were Regade Magic and Stolen Magic by Stephanie Burgis, Eleanor and Park, and Jinx's Magic. (Also for younger readers, Journey by Aaron Becker and Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron.)

If I win, I think I'd choose Jinx's Magic, because I read a library copy and would love to have it for my very own. But I'm also wanting to read Cracks in the Kingdom, as I loved A Corner of White, and I've been wanting to read the Laura Florand books for a while now, too.

I felt like it was just another rehashing of the same things in so many other MG books: sad family, missing parents, TRAGEDY that must be overcome. And it was so slow. I wasn't enjoying it and as it's not the type of book my students would like, I decided to DNF. I'm not saying there aren't ANY MG readers out there who would like it, but I serve a small group and they are not into this kind of stuff.

I can't believe you were able to stop reading Empire of Bones. You have some serious will power!

Okay, I think I need to read the Arcana Chronicles books now. :)

I LOVE the Kat books so much. Did you know Burgis is currently working on a novella called Courting Magic that takes place when Kat is a teenager? I'm so excited.

Yay for Black Dog, Cruel Beauty, A Face Like Glass and The Chocolate Temptation! Loved reading all of those. I have the first Virginia Kantra book in my Kindle since you and Laura have convinced me that I should read this series. And I really need to read A Corner of White. I'm curious about Sage Blackwood's books too.

Black Dog and The Chocolate Temptation are also in my list of best reads in 2014 so far. I would have to think about Cruel Beauty. The other books in my list are Touchstone and Medair by Andrea K. Host (as you know, I would love for you to read her books).

I promise you I will get to Andrea Host's books ASAP!

Oooh umm... Well, most recently, I've really enjoyed HIGH & DRY by Sarah Skilton and NEARLY GONE by Elle Cosimano. Both are contemporaries, oddly enough, but both also have mysteries that need to be solved. Yay, mysteries!

And of COURSE I'd choose Hardinge's book. I've heard so many good things. :) You know practically every way to contact me, so any would work.

I ALMOST picked up a copy of HIGH & DRY at ALA then didn't. Regretting that now.

Favorite Kissing Scenes

When thinking of a favorite things post I could do for February I decided it would have to be kissing. I've already done couples and I was feeling in the mood to do something fluffy and Valentine's related. So kisses it is. I read more MG than YA, and the YA I read tends to not focus on romance so this was actually harder than I expected it to be though a few jumped into my head right away. (And one of my choices does actually come from a MG book. One is adult. Gasp!) The actual scene from the book is quoted followed by my thoughts. The king lifted a hand to her cheek and kissed her. It was not a kiss between strangers, not even a kiss between a bride and a groom. It was a kiss between a man and his wife, and when it was over, the king closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the hollow of the queen's shoulder, like a man seeking respite, like a man reaching home at the end of the day . - The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner Turner doesn't write the

TTT: Most Recent Additions to My TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly themed blog hop created by  The Broke and the Bookish  and now hosted at  That Artsy Reader Girl . This Week's Topic: Most Recent Additions to My TBR List From Most Recent to Least: What books have recently caught your eye?

This Side of Home

What attracted me to This Side of Home by Renee Watson was the cover. The story hooked my interest. The characters made me fall in love. Maya has lived her entire life in the same neighborhood in Portland hanging out with the same group of friends: her twin sister Nikki, their best friend Essence, and Ronnie, Malachi, and Devin-three boys her father mentors. They have plans for the future that involve each other: prom, college, life. But things in their neighborhood are changing. People are moving in and starting new businesses. Property values are going up as a result. In addition to change, this is also causing trouble. Essence has to move out of her  house when the owner decides he can make more money selling it than renting it. The racial demographics of the school, which has been mostly African American, is shifting. This presents new challenges and choices for Maya and her friends. It brings new people into their lives at the same time. Maya has to figure out how-and if-she wa

Serafina and the Black Cloak

Serafina and the Black Cloak  by Robert Beatty is a thrilling tale of mystery and adventure set at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in 1899. Having lived in Asheville and visited the house several times, there was no way I was going to pass up a chance to read this. (Also it's MG fantasy, always a bonus for me.) Serafina lives in secret in the basement of the Vanderbilt's spacious vacation home. She has lived there most of her life. Her father worked on the house as it was being built and is the mechanic who runs the massive generator and keeps the electricity going. Serafina is the chief rat catcher, slipping through the halls of her massive home secretly and quietly. She is light on her feet, sees well in the dark, and is quick enough to catch the vermin and keep them out. Serafina knows she if different and strange. Her father insists she stay hidden. But all that changes when one night Serafina witnesses a horrible crime. A little girl, a guest in the house, is fleein

Shorter Musings MG Fantasy

Here are some shorter musings on recent MG fantasy reads. Anya and the Dragon   by Sofiya Pasternack This book is fun. It is a book full of adventure, an obvious bad guy, some more complicated morally gray area characters, and a strong, brave heroine. It is also a book about friendships, community, and fighting for what is right. All things that usually work for me really well. While I enjoyed this, I did feel it was a little overlong and there were certain plot points at the end I didn't love. However, there were things I thought were done really well, such as Anya's Jewish faith and the idea that power needs to be challenged. In the end it was a middle of the road read for me, but it is one I will certainly be recommending to dragon and fantasy adventure lovers I know! R is for Rebel   by J. Anderson Coats This is tough because I usually really like Coats's books. I had such a hard time with this one though on so many levels. It's difficult to get into because t
