Finding My Words

Things have been slow on the blog lately and that's because for a while there I lost all my words. I've been feeling a lot these past few weeks and all of it was overwhelming. There has been anxiety and fear, but also a fierce need to DO something. That overwhelmed me all the more, and I couldn't help but feel like this space was frivolous and maybe not the best use of my time in the face of everything else going on. But I kept reading because without books and words I don't know what I would be. As always, reading helped me find a path even if I still can't see the end of it and the shadows are looming dark. There are many recent or upcoming releases I've read that speak to the heart of where we are as a nation, and I've realized that boosting those voices is important. My space here is small and my voice is not loud, but I'm going to use it to the best of my ability. Because books speak to the heart. They build empathy. They force us to see people,...

Birthday Books

It is birthday month in the Painter house. May is actually harder on our budget and time than December, if you can believe it. We have three birthdays and an anniversary. Two of those birthdays belong to my children, and I like to share what books I'm purchasing for them every year. For LM (who turned 8 yesterday):  For Bit (who turns 12 next week; no one tell her): And a card that lets her know I've pre-ordered these for her: If you are wondering why Bit has two more and thinking that is unfair, it is because she is my voracious reader. LM is harder to please. I love giving books as gifts! What are some books you enjoy giving to others?

My Favorite Books From Every Year I've Been Alive

My friend Benji did this on his blog a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was a great idea. I wanted in on the fun and made my own list. 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 is still to be determined Some of these years were a lot harder than others, but this was fun to do. Looking through the list, it definitely covers all the genres I love and all my years of reading. And makes it very clear how I feel about Megan Whalen Turner and Diana Wynne Jones.
