Every year I like to do a list of the characters I've fallen in love with during that year's reading. This list always ends up including some books that don't make my end of year Top 10 and it feels good to spread the love. This is only for new-to-me in 2013 characters. I may have read a book that includes characters I love but met in 2011 or 2012, but I like to leave this for the new characters.
Links are to my Reviews:
Jinx, Simon, and Sophie
While reading Jinx by Sage Blackwood, I knew I had found my first set of beloved characters of the year. I love how Jinx has to work so hard for what he wants, and like any typical kid he would rather it come easier than it does. Jinx's switch from child to adolescent and how that changes his character are so well done too. Simon is exactly the sort of character I always fall for in books and I love how Jinx is starting to pick up some of his habits but is his own person too. The interactions between Simon and Sophie in the book are some of the best. I can not wait to see more from all of them in the follow up, Jinx's Magic.
French Chocolatiers and the American Women They Fall For
Because listing all of their names would take more than one line, but I have so much I love all of the characters in Laura Florand's Amour et Chocolate series. Every single couple has a truly great story, and the stories are made to be reread. I think Dom and Jamie are probably my favorite, but truly every single one of them is special. And I love the way characters from the first books return in the later ones. (Particularly the heroes so they can snark on the new hero. Sylvain is particularly good at this.)
Rose, Roza, Irene, Elodie
Man, I didn't know that any story of friendship, bravery, and sacrifice could get to me as fully as Code Name Verity did last year, but Elizabeth Wein managed to do it again. And in such a short span of time. There is really nothing I can say about these characters that will do justice to experiencing their story. Suffice to say if you haven't yet you should get on that.
And because Elizabeth Wein is just that brilliant she gets to have two of these this year. I finally got around to reading The Lion Hunter series and Telemakos won me over heart and soul from his first appearance. He held onto my heart through all of the books and continues to do so. He is definitely the character from this year I am most desperate for more of.
Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mac Feegle
I finally got around to reading this series as well this year and adored every moment spent watching Tiffany grow into her powers and the Wee Free Men "helping" her. These books are funny, heart breaking, and joyful all at once and they are all about the characters. There is some great action and wonderful plots, but it is Tiffany and how she grows as a person that kept me riveted as a reader. (And I just want to scoop up the Nac Mac Feegle and hug them. Even if they would probably try to beat me up for it.)
Otter, Kestrel, Cricket, and Orca
I love these characters. I can't even begin to express all of the reasons why without saying way too much about the story which shouldn't be spoiled. I will just say that I loved their bravery, loyalty, and friendship. And their willingness to do what was difficult and to stand together against the world when necessary.
How about you? Are there any special characters who captured your heart this year?
