TTT: Newbery Winners I Can't Believe I Haven't Read

This week's TTT topic: Books I Can't Believe I Haven't Read in X Genre

In honor of yesterday's YMAs I decided to do Newbery winners I haven't read (including Honors because I've actually read most of the Award winners).

Why have I not read Nancy Farmer's Newbery wins???? I've read other stuff of hers. I need to get on that.

HOUSE OF THE SCORPION is *amazing*. Definitely check it out.
Two of my very favorites are on your list--The Blue Sword (you've probably read The Hero and the Crown?) and A Single Shard. Lucky you, reading them for the first time!

The only one of these I've read is The House of the Scorpion and it was SO GOOD. I really need to read more Newberry winners...

UGH. I meant Newbery. Stupid fingers slipping on the keyboard :)

I'm finally reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rat's of NIMH for a classic read this month.

I have actually (surprise!) read most of these - I still need to read The Ear, the Eye and the Arm, Enchantress from the Stars (how have I never even heard of this before??) and Penny from Heaven. And I still need to read this year's winner as well, though I remember that you loved it.

Some of my favouritest books ever are on your list! Might I suggest starting with The Blue Sword? (I reread that one every few years.) The Ear, the Eye and the Hand is an amazing story. And I love, love, love The Enchantress from the Stars! (Maybe because I read it at the right time during my adolescence?) Very fond feelings for Mrs. Frisby, though it's been ages. Haven't read A Single Shard, yet, though, or Penny From Heaven.
Ooo, I was attracted to many of the book covers!! Here's my TTT list for the week: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2015/02/top-ten-tuesday-top-ten-books-i-cant.html

I don't know why I haven't read so many of Farmer's books. I've read some of her non-Newbery wins. How did this happen???

I have read The Hero and the Crown. It's a big part of the reason I haven't read The Blue Sword. I kind of hated it. *ducks* I really do want to read A Single Shard. I'm not sure why I never have. I was teaching 5th grade when it won. I had it in my classroom library.

That's two people so far who've said read House of the Scorpion. I will get on it.

I may never get to that one. I have a thing about animal stories. There are very few I enjoy. That's why I never read it as a child either. I've NEVER liked animal stories.
Brandy said…
YES!!! I LOVE The Crossover. You should have seen me on Monday when they announced it won.

The thing about The Blue Sword is that I kind of hated The Hero and the Crown. It's why I haven't read it yet. I know I need to give it a chance on its own merits, but one of my big problems with Crown was the mage guy and I hear he's in this one too. But I will try and give it a chance soon!

I tried to pick the best covers for each book. :) The thing about Newberys is they are always in print and go through many many covers.

I liked Blue Sword way better than Crown. Very different kind of story: unmagical girl drawn into secret magical world; slow-build romance; horses. Are you talking about the evil mage-guy? Or the animal guy? In either case, don't worry, you won't have the same issues.

You haven't read The Blue Sword?! That's one of my absolute favorites. I see in the comments that you mentioned that you hated The Hero and the Crown, I didn't love that one either so I think you should still give The Blue Sword a try. Have you read McKinley's Beauty? I used to love Newberys when I was a kid, Mrs. Frisby was a really fun read.

I think The Blue Sword is so much better than The Hero and The Crown. I highly recommend guving it a try. I'm a big McKinley fan and own nearly all her books but Blue Sword comes off my shelf the most frequently.
Brandy said…
A lot of people have said that! I will definitely be reading it.

I have read Beauty. I didn't love that one, but didn't hate it either. I just don't understand it. I feel so out of sync with the rest of the world.

Favorite Kissing Scenes

When thinking of a favorite things post I could do for February I decided it would have to be kissing. I've already done couples and I was feeling in the mood to do something fluffy and Valentine's related. So kisses it is. I read more MG than YA, and the YA I read tends to not focus on romance so this was actually harder than I expected it to be though a few jumped into my head right away. (And one of my choices does actually come from a MG book. One is adult. Gasp!) The actual scene from the book is quoted followed by my thoughts. The king lifted a hand to her cheek and kissed her. It was not a kiss between strangers, not even a kiss between a bride and a groom. It was a kiss between a man and his wife, and when it was over, the king closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the hollow of the queen's shoulder, like a man seeking respite, like a man reaching home at the end of the day . - The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner Turner doesn't write the

Shadowshaper

Shadowshaper  by Daniel José Older is everywhere. Best of lists. Award buzz. Blogs everywhere. It's one of those books everyone is reading and talking about. I had it on my TBR but decided I definitely needed to read it before the year was out just so I could weigh in on one of the most talked about books of 2015 if asked. It is deserving of every good thing said about it. Every. One. Sierra was looking forward to a relaxing summer break. Her plans involved hanging out with her friends and painting. They did not involve being chased by zombie like creatures and threatened by a magical power connected to her family's heritage she has never heard of. When murals begin fading all over her Brooklyn neighborhood, Sierra is perplexed. When her grandfather, who had a stroke, begins to apologize and starts repeating strange phases and insisting Sierra get the help of a boy she barely knows to help her finish her mural, Sierra is concerned but mostly about her grandfather. Then at a

Serafina and the Black Cloak

Serafina and the Black Cloak  by Robert Beatty is a thrilling tale of mystery and adventure set at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in 1899. Having lived in Asheville and visited the house several times, there was no way I was going to pass up a chance to read this. (Also it's MG fantasy, always a bonus for me.) Serafina lives in secret in the basement of the Vanderbilt's spacious vacation home. She has lived there most of her life. Her father worked on the house as it was being built and is the mechanic who runs the massive generator and keeps the electricity going. Serafina is the chief rat catcher, slipping through the halls of her massive home secretly and quietly. She is light on her feet, sees well in the dark, and is quick enough to catch the vermin and keep them out. Serafina knows she if different and strange. Her father insists she stay hidden. But all that changes when one night Serafina witnesses a horrible crime. A little girl, a guest in the house, is fleein
